This past semester in my News Reporting II class, we had to read and reply to the most commonly asked questions asked on an interview for a job in journalism. See if you agree with the list and feel free to add a few of your own!
1. Are you a better writer or reporter?
2. Why are you a journalism major?
3. What beat or area of journalism interests you most?
4. What newspapers and magazines do you read regularly?
5. What are your strengths as a journalist?
6. What are your weaknesses?
7. Do you work well on deadline?
8. Where do you see yourself in five years?
9. What experience do you have with video, audio, podcasting and other multimedia tools?
10. What’s one thing you would change about BLANK newspaper’s BLANK section?

Nice! I was asked all but one of these questions during a recent interview.
I always dread being asked the five year question. I’d like to just say “I see myself being 25.”
… Probably not appropriate.
The question about being a better writer or reporter is interesting – I wonder which is the “right” answer.
Here are a few I seem to get in most interviews:
For copy editors, the equivalent of the reporter/writer question: Are you a better editor or a better headline-writer?
Why do you want to work for (insert newspaper/station/Web site here)?
Describe the last time you missed deadline/had to run a correction/etc.
Describe an obstacle you’ve faced and how you overcame it.
Hummm… Question 6 : What can we answer ?
