Canon has introduced a new camera called “Canon EOS 5D Mark II” that will truly alter the relationship between photojournalism and online journalism.
This little camera (that runs $2699) does just as much (if not more!) than cameras and video equipment and costs less than half the price of professional equipment.
New York photographer Vincent Laforet was among the first to use the camera. He explained how useful it is to the web on his blog:
It produces Apple’s Quicktime .mov files btw – simply copy them off of your CF Cards – double click on them – and they open up in the Quicktime player w/o a single hiccup at 1080p… Drop them into Final cut pro and start your edit… no rendering is necessary. Oh – and realize that it took us less than 20 minutes to copy over more than 12 hours of footage off of the CF cards…
He was assigned, by Canon, to shoot film that would show what the camera could do. With a budget of $5000 (most of it went to renting a helicopter for a few hours), he created a video that will make it easier for bloggers and newspapers and magazines to explore quality artistic footage on their websites.
When watching this video called “Reverie,” you can not help but think about how this sort of technology can be applied to fashion magazines. It opens a whole new avenue for photojournalism. Instead of just having Mario Testino or Patrick Demarchelier photographs appear in a magazine, now just their stills can and readers can go on the magazine’s website to see their short film.
